Though Cordyceps has only recently exploded in popularity in the west, it has a long history of use in Tibetan and Chinese medicine. The first mention of Cordyceps in medical literature comes from the 15th century Tibetan medical tract Ten Million Instructions: A Relic, where it is mentioned as a remedy for ailments of sexual virility. Due to its limited availability, Cordyceps did not become known in China until as late as the Qing dynasty. The first mention of the medicinal comes from the 1713 volume “Annals of Sichuan” in which it was purported to be “warm in nature and restorative of the vital essences”. Subsequent Chinese materia medica would all generally emphasize Cordyceps effectiveness in chronic lung conditions and its potency as a virility-enhancing drug.

In modern times, the celebrated Chinese physician Li Ke (李可) used Cordyceps as a key medicinal in his formulas for treating people recovering from diseases of the lungs such as chronic bronchitis and pulmonary fibrosis. It is thus no surprise that the Journal of Science and Healing recommended cordyceps as a key medicinal in convalescence from Covid-19, citing its ability to improve ventilatory capacity and reduce airway inflammation.[1]

After Chinese long-distance female runners shattered world records in 1993 and 1994 with the help of Cordyceps sinensis supplements, research into the caterpillar fungus exploded in the west. In the following we’ll detail some highlights from this bevy of research with regard to three particular actions: exercise performance enhancement and anti-fatigue, anti-inflammation and sexual health.  

Exercise Performance Enhancement and Anti-Fatigue

  1. Chen S. et al, (2010) performed a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to examine the effect of Cordyceps Sinensis on aerobic capacity in the elderly. After 12 weeks, the medicinal was found to increase the metabolic threshold and ventilatory threshold of subjects. This indicated that Cordyceps could promote better aerobic performance in the elderly.[2]
  2. Li and Li (2009) and Yan et al (2012) found that C. sinensis polysaccharides extended the time to exhaustion in swimming mice, increased hepatic and muscle glycogen levels, and decreased the blood lactic acid and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels. Such observations confirmed the anti-fatigue effects of C. sinensis polysaccharides.[3]
  3. P. Singh et al. (2014) found that Cordyceps not only increased muscular endurance in mice, it also had an anti-depressant and mood-elevating effect. The increase in muscular endurance was attributed to increased oxygenation.[4]

Anti-Inflammatory

  1. Park et al. (2014) documented that Cordyceps Sinensis extracts exert clear anti-inflammatory effects by downregulating NO production and pro-inflammatory cytokines, making it useful as an anti-inflammatory drug or supplement. This is, of course, also part of why Cordyceps was recommended above for convalescence in Covid related lung injury. [5]

Sexual Performance Enhancement and Infertility

  1. Cordyceps has been shown to significantly increase testosterone production in male mice and estrogen production in female mice. [6] [7] Increased testosterone in men not only promotes a stronger sex-drive, it also helps build muscle mass and improves mood. In women, higher estrogen levels increase libido, combat vaginal dryness, boost mood and protect the brain. Furthermore, the estrogenic and progestogenic properties of Cordyceps may aid in promoting fertility in women suffering from low levels. [8][9]
