This Volcanic Honey Tea GABA Oolong from Tengchong in western Yunnan is a premium, artisanal tea that combines the natural sweetness of wild honey with the rich, smooth flavor and health benefits of GABA Oolong. Grown in the pristine volcanic soils of Tengchong at a high elevation of 2300-2500 m, this tea benefits from the unique altitude and mineral-rich environment, imparting a distinct depth and complexity to its taste.
The tea is coated with wild Yunnan honey, added to the tea at the final stage for a gentle sweetness, balancing the tea’s natural floral and slightly roasted notes. The tea’s flavor is of tropical fruit, caramel, flowers, vanilla and baked goods, with a honey sweetness. Each resealable bag contains 50g of tea (one tsp is about 2g).

In the 1980s, tea growers in Japan developed special GABA-enriched/fortified teas, known simply as GABA teas, through an oxygen-free fermentation process. These enriched teas contain 800% as much GABA as a regular cup of oolong tea.
Several studies tested GABA oolong teas, in particular, with an Australian study concluding that its consumption led to a significant decrease in the immediate stress score and a significant improvement in heart rate variability, concluding that “even a very small amount of GABA-fortified oolong tea leads to a significant effect on acute stress levels reflected by the improved HRV measures” (Hinton et al, 2019).
This tea has a lower caffeine level, less than half of a cup of coffee, which makes it a great choice for drinking late into the day.
