A highly revered herbal formula for GI issues such as upset stomach, diarrhea, and vomiting, Huo Xiang Zheng Qi has been shown in studies to resolve dampness pattern through multiple approaches: normalize gastrointestinal dysfunction, improve immune and metabolic functions, and regulating gut microbiota disturbance. It is also spelled Huo Xsiang Cheng Chi) and is translated as Cablin Patchouli Herb Extract Tablets.
Renowned for its efficacy in treating food poisoning and other gastric complaints, this classic formula has become an essential component of any herbal travel kit. When traveling to new places, our immune systems can often have difficulty fending off the entirely different blend of microorganisms in the local food and water, which can lead to a whole host of digestive complaints that delay or derail travel plans. HXZQ tablets are a proven remedy for common gastrointestinal illnesses that afflict travelers.
This formula was first recorded in the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127) imperial patent formula compendium Prescriptions of the Bureau of the Management and Administration of Pharmacy, but came to prominence during the Qing Dynasty when physician Wu Jutong, famed for his ability to treat Seasonal Warm diseases, popularized its use in combating the challenging GI symptoms related to viruses like the pandemic virus that swept China in the late 18th century. Through his work on the front lines of that pandemic, Dr. Wu battle-tested numerous formulas and Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San emerged as a leading treatment.
Since the early 20th century, the “Fire Spirit” School of Southwestern China has also notably implemented a version of HXZQ as an important opening step in removing blockages like dampness, phlegm and other fluid congestion from the body and ensuring the free flow of the bowels to eliminate toxins and heat from below. As such, we see how HXZQ is not just implemented in acute circumstances, but also in improving chronic GI disease.
Due to the remarkable and consistent effects achieved by HXZQ tablets in gastrointestinal disease, there has been an enormous amount of research done on its healing mechanism. Notably, a joint lab and clinical study performed at Chongqing Medical Technology Institute found that HXZQ simultaneously protects against bacterial toxins (LPS) by activating the innate and adaptive immune responses of the GI tract, healing damage to the intestines through multiple anti-inflammatory pathways and regulating the gut microbe environment.
Additionally, a 1994 study performed by Hangzhou City Chinese Medical Hospital found HXZQ tablets outperformed the antibiotic Norfloxacin in mitigating abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, fever and other symptoms and signs of acute gastritis. HXZQ was significantly more effective and fast-acting in treating diarrhea, vomiting, pain and lack of appetite.
In a 2011 study performed at a Jiangsu Chinese medical hospital, HXZQ Tablets in combination with an anti-secretory agent also vastly outperformed the solitary use of anti-secretory agent in mitigating diarrhea and other GI complaints in patients with rotavirus diarrhea, a form of diarrhea so common among travelers that it is also called “travelers’ diarrhea.”
