Vision Teapills are a well-known Chinese medicine all-herbal formula used to improve eye strain and fatigue, dry eyes, blurred vision, photophobia (sensitivity to light), excessive tearing, floaters, and to make eyes brighter. Known in Chinese as Mingmu Dihuang (also spelled Ming Mu Di Huang), it was first found in the traditional Chinese medicine handbook of the Qing Dynasty, Six Books of Medical Stragedy. This formula has been widely used in traditional Chinese medicine and its efficacy in improving eye health is supported by a variety of clinical trials.
Mingmu Dihuang can also regulate blood circulation to improve ocular blood supply, and prevent and relieve eye disease, such as glaucoma and cataracts. Rehmannia and Chinese yam can also improve symptoms of vertigo and tinnitus. Wolfberries and chrysanthemum are used to help enhance vision, as well as improve dark circles and eye bags.
In a 2022 study published in the journal Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, Mingmu Dihuang was found to effectively relieve acute oxidative damage in the retinal pigment epithelium, as well as increase cell viability, restore antioxidant enzyme activity, and reduce reactive oxygen species fluorescence intensity.
This formula is also successfully used to treat eye disease in animals. In one case study, a cat diagnosed with severe glaucoma was taken to a conventional veterinarian who prescribed Timolol eye drops. After no success, the cat was referred to a board-certified ophthalmologist. The ophthalmologist attempted to treat the glaucoma, but the cat did not respond significantly. The ophthalmologist then recommended bilateral enucleation (surgical eye removal) as the best option to control the pain and unresponsive elevated intraocular pressure. The owner then sought out traditional Chinese medicine treatment. The cat received acupuncture and Mingmu Dihuang, and after one week, the cat’s intraocular pressure dropped from 40 to 36mm (L) and from 59 to 47mm (R). At two weeks, the pressures had dropped to 30mm and 40mm. By this time, the cat was no longer in pain. At the one year, acupuncture was discontinued and the cat was maintained on Mingmu Dihuang alone. After two years, the cat was doing extremely well with no signs of glaucoma or pain, and stable intraocular pressures.

1. Clinical observation of Mingmu Dihuang Pill in treating dry eye
Dry eye is a common clinical eye disease. In this study, 24 cases of dry eye (48 eyes) were treated with Mingmu Dihuang Pill for 4 weeks. The results showed that the patient's symptoms such as visual fatigue, foreign body sensation, and dryness were significantly improved after treatment (p<0.01). The objective indexes BUT and Schirmer test were also significantly improved (P<0.01 and P<0.05). It has a notable effect on improving the symptoms of dry eye, especially in alleviating the sense of dry eye and eye distension.

2. The effect of Mingmu Dihuang pill on diabetic retinopathy (damage to retinal blood vessels resulting in blurred vision and floaters)
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes. This study was to observe the effect of Mingmu Dihuang pill on diabetic retinopathy. 80 patients were randomly divided into a treatment group and a control group, with 40 cases in each group. The control group received standardized Western medicine treatment; The treatment group was treated with Mingmu Dihuang Pill for 3 months on the basis of the control group. The results showed that 9 cases were obvious effective, 28 cases were effective, and 3 cases were ineffective, the total effective rate was 92.5%. 3. Observation on the curative effect of Mingmu Dihuang Pill in the treatment of early senile cataracts
Senile cataract is a common and frequently-occurring disease in the elderly. To study the treatment of early senile cataracts with Mingmu Dihuang pill combined with Shapux eye drops. 124 patients were randomly divided into the treatment group, 62 (115 eyes); The control group included 62 patients (108 eyes). The control group received eye drops; The treatment group was treated with Mingmu Dihuang Pill for 90 days on the basis of the control group. Results of 115 eyes in the treatment group, 71 eyes were obvious effective, 34 eyes were effective and 10 eyes were ineffective. The total effective rate was 91.3%. In the control group of 108 eyes, 50 eyes were obviously effective, 27 eyes were effective, 31 eyes were ineffective, and the total effective rate was 71.3%. The treatment group was significantly better than the control group (p<0.05). 4. Mingmu Dihuang pills to treat amblyopia (decreased eyesight due to abnormal visual development)
In this study, Mingmu Dihuang Pill was used to treat 36 eyes of 20 older children with amblyopia, which were randomly divided into treatment group and control group. Treatment group 11 patients with 20 eyes; Control group 9 patients with 16 eyes. The control group was treated with glasses combined with amblyopia. On the basis of the control group, the treatment group took Mingmu Dihuang pill for 6 months. The results showed that the visual acuity of both groups was improved after treatment (p<0.01).
